MILLET, MI

Track Side; Millet, MI Depot; September 1999
Millet is just southwest of Lansing, along the CN-former Grand Trunk main line between Port Huron and Chicago. The depot there was originally built in the 1890s and was used as a passenger station until 1955.

The Lansing Model Railroad Club obtained the use of the building in the late 1950's and built a model railroad layout in the old depot. In the early 1960s, the GTW wanted to demolish the building, allowing for the expansion of the adjacent Purina elevator. The railroad offered to sell the building, but it had to be moved off railroad property. In September, 1963, the building was moved to it's present site, 1 block away on Old Lansing Road. The building and layout were severely damaged in transit, and it took several years of work to restore the building and start a new layout. In the process, a basement and central heat were added.

The basement houses a meeting room and work shop facilities. The layout is on the main floor, and upstairs is the dispatchers console and a walk way allowing viewing the layout without interfering with the operators down below.
